Women's Basketball - Warriors beat Albright for first time in five years, 74-49

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – As the shot clock wound down, junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) dribbled, then lofted a 24-footer that swished through the net and she trotted backwards down the court smiling. That shot, early in the fourth quarter, summed up much of the night for the Lycoming College women’s basketball team, which overcame a slow start to beat Albright College for the first time in 10 meetings, 74-49, in MAC Commonwealth action at Lamade Gym on Wednesday night, Nov. 28.

Four Warriors (4-2 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) finished in double figures, led by 19 points, five assists and three steals by Kline. Junior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added 17 points, two assists and two steals, senior Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added 11 points, three assists and two 3-pointers and senior Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) added 10 points, three rebounds and a steal. Freshman Alex Jones (Glenshaw, Pa./Saint Joseph) also posted eight points and four rebounds.

The Warriors shot 43 percent in the game, including 53 percent (18-34) in the second and third quarters when they took a game tied at 13 and opened up a 24-point lead. Lycoming outrebounded Albright (3-4 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth), 37-31, and held a 23-7 advantage in turnovers, which led to a 26-7 advantage in points off them.

Down 6-2 in the opening three minutes, the Warriors fought back to take its first lead of the game with six straight points, as Kline hit a layup for the lead. With the game tied at 13 at the beginning of the second quarter, Lycoming broke the game open with a 15-2 run, leading 28-13 five minutes into the period.

Albright never got back within single digits, as Lycoming took a 41-25 lead at the break, and with a six-point run at the end of the third quarter got the lead above 20 points for the rest of the game.

Albright, which shot 35 percent (17-of-49) from the field, were led by 12 points and seven rebounds from Zaria Mohamed and 12 points from Lauren Killion. Shaunna Bruker added 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 1, when they head to Stevenson for a 3 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
