LORETTO, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the young season after suffering a 113-59 loss at Division I Saint Francis University on Tuesday night at the DeGol Arena. The Red Flash improved to 2-4 on the year.
Freshmen William Melson (Allentown, Pa./Dieruff) and Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West)were the bright spots for the Huskies as they both finished in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Melson made his first collegiate start in place of junior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading), who did not play, and scored the first 13 points of his collegiate career on Tuesday night. He went 4-of-9 from the field, 3-of-6 from long range, and 2-of-5 from the foul line en route to the double-digit performance. He had played only eight minutes combined in the first two games before seeing 35 minutes of action on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Elmore made it a perfect 3-for-3 in double-digit performances to start his career as she scored 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field and 1-of-3 from deep.
Redshirt junior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) contributed eight points and four rebounds while junior Austin Harriott (Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) chipped in with seven points, six rebounds, and three assists off the bench. Also of note was that freshman Sekou Fofana (Upper Darby, Pa./Springfield Commonwealth) also scored the first points of his career as he finished with four points while adding five rebounds and two steals.
The Huskies trailed by two, 20-18, with 11:28 left in the first half after redshirt sophomore Peyton Mortellite(Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) knocked down a three-pointer but watched the Red Flash go on a 38-14 run to close out the opening 20 minutes with a 58-32 lead at the break. Saint Francis poured it on in the second half as it outscored the Huskies, 55-27, over the final 20 minutes of action.
Saint Francis had six players in double figures led by Randall Gaskins who had 23 points on 10-of-13 from the field. He was also one of three players with six assists for the Red Flash on the night. Keith Braxton and Myles Thompson each added 15 points with Andre Wolford (12), Isaiah Blackmon (11), and Jamaal King (10) also hitting double digits.
The Huskies shot 19-of-54 (35.2%) from the field and were 7-of-17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc. Saint Francis, meanwhile, shot 47-of-76 (61.8%) from the floor and hit 9-of-24 (37.5%) from long range. The Red Flash out-rebounded the Huskies, 44-24, and turned the ball over only eight times which led to just four Bloomsburg points. The Huskies committed 20 miscues which led to 34 Saint Francis points.
Bloomsburg will return to action on Wednesday night, November 28, when it hosts Felician University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
