BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Four players finished in double figures as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team bounced back for a 77-72 victory over visiting Felician University on Wednesday night at the Nelson Field House. The win snapped a two-game losing skid and evened the Huskies' record at 2-2 on the season. The Golden Falcons, meanwhile, dropped to 1-4 overall.
Junior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading), who missed Tuesday night's game at Saint Francis, returned to the lineup and scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Huskies offensively. Freshman Travis Elmore(Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) continues to pay immediate dividends for Bloomsburg as he posted his first collegiate double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in his first career start. He has now reached double figures in scoring in each of his first four games at the collegiate level. Sophomore Nicholas King (Easton, Pa./Freedom) added 13 points and six rebounds while redshirt junior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) narrowly missed a double-double as he finished with 10 points and nine boards. Junior Austin Harriott (Philadelphia, Pa./Hun School) also just missed a double-double as he finished with eight points, including a pair of thunderous dunks, and 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled out of the gates as the Huskies led by one, 11-10, at the second media timeout of the opening half. Bloomsburg extended the advantage to three, 19-16, at the next media timeout and then went on a 7-0 run to take a 26-16 lead with 6:58 left in the first half. Elmore scored five of the seven points during the spurt while Mauras added the other two on a fast-break layup. Bloomsburg built the advantage to as many as 15 points, 39-24, with 2:38 left after a triple from Mauras and a layup from Saxton before the Golden Falcons went on a 9-0 run to close out the first half to send the teams to their respective locker rooms with the Huskies leading, 39-33.
The second-half lead for the Huskies stayed in single digits and was eventually trimmed to two, 54-52, with 10:08 left in regulation after Felician's Rahsaan Williams nailed an eight-foot jumper. Bloomsburg responded with a 6-0 run to take a 60-52 lead with 8:25 left as Mauras and redshirt senior Darius Robinson-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley Charter) provided the offense during the stretch. The Huskies led by nine, 63-54, with 7:08 left before the Golden Falcons chipped away again and cut the lead to three, 66-63, with five minutes remaining in regulation. But, Bloomsburg essentially put the game out of reach with an 8-1 run over the next four minutes to take a 74-64 lead with 1:19 left. The Golden Falcons would not go quietly as they cut the lead to five in the closing seconds but could get no closer.
Mauras was 7-of-13 from the field (1-of-5 from deep) but was only 7-of-12 from the foul line en route to his game-high 22 points. His foul shooting was clutch down the stretch, however, as he was perfect on four attempts in the last two minutes of regulation. Elmore, meanwhile, was 8-of-17 from the field to post his career-high point total. As a team, Bloomsburg shot 30-of-67 (44.8%) from the floor but struggled from long range as it knocked down only 3-of-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc. The Huskies went 14-of-24 (58.3%) from the line which actually improved the team's percentage from the stripe to 56.3% (54-of-96) on the season.
Williams had a huge night for the Golden Falcons as he posted 16 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Zamir Wright paced Felician with 21 points. The Golden Falcons shot 26-of-73 (35.6%) from the field and hit only 5-of-24 (20.8%) from long range.
Bloomsburg will play its first PSAC game of the season on Saturday, December 1, when it hosts Gannon University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
