BU Men's And Women's Swimming Heads To Akron For Three-Day Zippy Invitational This Weekend

AKRON, Ohio - The Bloomsburg University men's and women's swimming teams return to action this weekend as they head to Akron to compete in the three-day Zippy Invitational. Action gets underway with Friday's preliminary swims scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and will conclude with Sunday's finals set to begin at 4:00 p.m.

The field features mostly Division I institutions as participants from ten schools will compete over the weekend - Akron (W), Bloomsburg (M/W), Bowling Green (W), Buffalo (W), Clarion (M/W), Marshall (W), Niagara (M/W), Oakland (M/W), St. Bonaventure (M/W), and Toledo (W). Last season, the Bloomsburg women's team finished seventh overall while the men's team placed fifth overall. The women had seven NCAA swims while Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville)broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke during last season's three-day event. The men, meanwhile, got its only NCAA mark at last year's Zippy Invitational when Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy) broke the school record in the 500-yard freestyle.

After season-opening losses to West Chester, both teams have won five straight duals to enter the meet with 5-1 overall records on the season. The men and women last competed on Saturday, November 17, against Dickinson College at the Nelson Field House Pool.

On the women's side, Bloomsburg defeated Dickinson, 152-97, for its fifth consecutive victory. Nine different Huskies posted at least one win while 22 different swims qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships in February. Freshman Carlie Owens (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) paced Bloomsburg with a pair of individual victories while junior Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) had an individual win and was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that started the meet with a victory. Owens and Wadsworth, along with junior Becca Cubbler(Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and sophomore Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), each posted three PSAC marks while sophomore Chelsea Ackerson (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert), senior Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville), and senior Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area) qualified for the conference meet in two different events. Freshman Emily Smith (Youngwood, Pa./Hempfield), senior Sammie Carroll (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), senior Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest), and sophomore Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) each had one PSAC mark.

The men, meanwhile, knocked off the Red Devils by a final of 158-98 for its fifth straight win. Redshirt junior Kyle Dix(Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) had a big day in the pool for the Huskies as he won four times which included three individual events. Junior Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy) won a pair of individual events while freshman Colton Schnars (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and redshirt sophomore Matt Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) had an individual win and were part of the 200-yard medley relay team that started the day with a win. Junior Corey Smith (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Collin Hummel (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) were the other winners on the afternoon. Bloomsburg finished the day with 26 PSAC marks - three each from Smith, Rocchi, Dix, and freshman Jace Fry (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Boehme, Schnars, Hummel, senior Philip Nawn (Media, Pa./Penncrest), and redshirt sophomore Lucas Haywood (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) each qualified twice while redshirt junior Nathan Mihalko (Windber, Pa./Richland), junior Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), freshman Carson Hilliard (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford), and senior Matthew Schulz (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) each posted one PSAC mark.

The three-day event will conclude the first half of the season for the men's and women's swimming teams. The Huskies will be back in the pool for their winter training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning in early January. Bloomsburg will participate in the FLAC Winter Training Invitational on Wednesday, January 9 and then will head to State College to compete against the Nittany Lions of Penn State University on Saturday, January 19.
