Ruth Edith Bryon

LOCK HAVEN - Ruth Edith Bryon, 99, of Lock Haven, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the home of her daughter, Billie Luke, in Linwood, N.J.

Ruth was born in 1920 in Indiana County to William and Sarah Baird. She was one of seven children. A graduate of Glenn Campbell High School and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, she earned a teaching certificate in elementary education. Her teaching career began in a one-room school, which was a proud hallmark in her life.

In 1941 she married Clair M. Bryon and made Lock Haven, her home. She and Clair raised four children.

In 1965, after raising her children and surviving breast cancer, she enrolled in Lock Haven University to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation, she accepted a position as an elementary teacher in Renovo, where she taught until her retirement in 1983.

A proud Democrat who honored FDR, she was also proud of her Scottish heritage and enjoyed researching the ancestry of the Baird Clan. On Sunday she could be found hard at work on her NYT crossword until well into her late 90’s or working on her Rubix Cube. An avid reader, she couldn't keep enough books around.

Born in 1920, the year women got the right to vote, she was a strong supporter of improving the status of women and regretted not living to see a woman president. She derived the greatest pleasure in spending time with her extended family and friends. She loved to travel and did so avidly with her husband until his passing in 1988. Her interests then shifted to spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; discussing politics and researching her family tree, or playing solitaire. She loved to cook and always had oatmeal-raisin cookies on hand and didn't go a day without eating homemade grape jelly on her toast. A piping hot cup of coffee in her mug in the morning and perhaps a little glass of red wine or rum and coke would finish off a nice visit. Her dry wit and practical wisdom will be sorely missed, as she was one of the kindest and sweetest people most of us will ever know.

She is survived by her daughter, Billie Luke; her son, Larry (Linda Slenker); her grandchildren, Robert Luke, Bryon Luke (Christine), Bret Bryon (Ann Hegarty), Brad Bryon, Jill Bryon (David Grattan), Jodi Bryon (Brett Essler); and four great grandchildren, Emma Luke, Jordan Bryon, Sydney Bryon, and Joshua Luke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair; sons Frank and Tom; five brothers, Wendell, Frank, Harold, William and Paul; and by her sister, Betty Lautttamus.

A graveside service will take place at Dunnstown Cemetery at 11 a.m. on June 22, 2019. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
