HUGHESVILLE - Eleanor Shirley Starr Pfleegor (always known as Shirley), 91, of Clarkstown, died Friday, November 29, 2019 at Watsontown Nursing & Rehab Center.

Born March 3, 1928 in Williamsport, she was a daughter of the late Bruce D. and Olive J. (Smith) Starr. Her husband of 48 years, Francis J. Pfleegor, preceded her in death on January 4, 1997.

Shirley was a graduate of Hughesville High School, Class of 1947. After her marriage to Fran on October 30, 1948, she worked for five years at the silk mill in Montgomery. After the mill’s closing, she spent the next 12 years caring for her home and raising two children. In 1965, she went back to work part-time - first spending two years at Muncy High School proudly and thoroughly enjoying her role as a cafeteria lady, followed by two years at the Hurr’s Dairy store in Muncy. She went on to work full-time for the next 12 years at the Sylvania plant in Montoursville as a quality control inspector for camera flash bulbs until those jobs were phased out. She later returned to part-time work at Sears in the mall for 11 years - first in Catalog Sales and then in Customer Service, finally retiring in 1995.

Shirley was a member of Clarkstown United Methodist Church for 71 years. During that time she taught Sunday school classes, served as coordinator for all Sunday school activities, helped with Vacation Bible School, participated on various church committees and assisted with many dinners served by the church. Before becoming a resident at Watsontown, she enjoyed being the oldest living member of the congregation and was quite pleased to be the longest-lived resident of Clarkstown.

Shirley enjoyed traveling (especially driving around in her Thunderbird!), reading, keeping a spotless home, watching TV, napping on the couch, and occasionally going fishing with Fran. Before starting a family, she and Fran had often joined friends for camping and fishing trips to Lake Jean. They were both active members of a Muncy CB club for several years. She frequently served as a grade mother, band parent and chaperone during her children’s school years. She loved feeding and watching the birds and other critters in her backyard, always keeping an eye to the sky to see what planes were passing over head. This interest stemmed from her time as a civilian plane spotter with the Hughesville Civil Air Patrol during WW II. Her spotting group received citations for the accuracy of their observations.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy S. (Albert) Tagliaferri of Muncy; a son, Jeffrey J. (Bobbi) Pfleegor of Watsontown; a sister, Ann Maire Thompson of Atlanta, GA; a grandson, Eric J. Pfleegor; a brother-in-law, Russell D. Boozel; and a sister-in-law, Lois Rupart Temple.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by two sisters, Loretta Faye Taylor and Donna Lee Boozel; a brother, Bruce D. Starr, Jr.; as well as her beloved little dog Schnook.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville, with Rev. Kevin St. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, December 5, at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family on Shirley's memorial page.
