Mansfield, Pa. – The standoff that began Tuesday morning, Dec. 10, 2019, during which a trooper was shot and another injured, has come to an end this morning, according to the Pennsylvania State Police. 

During the standoff that began around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, the suspect barricaded himself in hthe residence on the 1500 block of Barney Hill Road, Nelson Township. The PSP Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was activated, and attempts were made to get the individual to surrender.

"The individual fired at PSP members numerous times during the approximately 14-hour standoff," according to a release issued by the PSP. "At approximately 2 a.m., December 11, 2019, PSP SErT returned fire and the individual was kiled."

During the standoff, one trooper was shot air lifted to a trauma unit from a landing zone at Elkland High School and was in stable condition as of 5 p.m. yesterday, FIRST News Now reported.

"The trooper who was shot did not require surgery. He is receiving treatment for his injuries and is in stable condition," the Pennsylvania State Police reported on their official Twitter page. 

Upon arrival on scene for a welfare check at the residence, troopers announced themselves and attempted to ascertain if anyone was in the residence, according to a release. After no response, the troopers entered the residence through an unlocked door and announced their presence again in attempts to get a response from anyone in the residence.

That’s when a gunshot was reportedly fired at the troopers and one of them was struck, police said. All three troopers retreated, requested backup and secured the scene.

Clarkwood Elementary, R.B. Walter Elementary and Williamson High School were placed in secure mode as an extra precaution due to the shooting incident, according to FIRST News Now.

Another trooper sustained an injury to his leg. He was treated and released.
