Williamsport – A city man has been charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a young child under the age of 11.
James A. Bergquist, 18, of Cemetery Street, allegedly touched the child inappropriately twice in May of 2019. On May 24, 2019, Pennsylvania State Police in Montoursville were contacted by Lycoming County Children and Youth Services regarding a suspected child abuse case.
The child was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center in Sunbury in June, and reportedly told investigators that Bergquist had twice touched her inappropriately at a residence in Loyalsock Township, according to the affidavit written by Trooper Michael App. Police later interviewed Bergquist, and he admitted to touching the child twice in an inappropriate manner, App wrote in the affidavit.
Bergquist was charged with rape of a child, statutory sexual assault: 11 years older, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of minors and other related charges. He was arraigned on Oct. 2 by District Magistrate Gary A. Whiteman and remanded to Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $99,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for 3 p.m. Oct. 21.
