Henry Rawcliffe is one of Gillespie's inspirations for opening a dog park in Montoursville

Some kids look forward to summer break to get a job, hang out with friends, sleep. Zoe Gillespie, who just finished up her junior year at Montoursville Area High School, is looking forward to those things, but is also focused on a bigger community service project.

Gillespie is working to establish a new dog park in Montoursville. Gillespie has already stood before borough council with the dog park concept, designated 41 Mill Street near the Sunoco and Green Bridge in Montoursville as the park location, and has begun to raise money.

One of the first things she did was start a Facebook page called Montoursville Dog Park. There, she’s solicited ideas for what residents would like in the park and encouraged people to post pictures of their pups.

“I would like to thank the Montoursville American Legion for their kindness and generosity,” Gillespie posted on the page this past week. “They recently donated $500 to the dog park fund. This project would not be possible without the support of the community, its businesses, and citizens.” Private citizens have also donated to the cause.

Gillespie plans to create an online donation platform in the near future to raise money, with a goal of raising $10,000. Funds will go toward erecting a fence, securing a water source, sanitation, potential agility equipment, and more.
