The Youth Services Department of the James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., is celebrating the magic of reading this spring.

During the month of April, staff members read to 88 classrooms served by the Storymobile early childhood vehicle and distributed new books for children as part of the One Book, Every Young Child program.

Also this spring, the centennial celebration of Children’s Book Week, the nation’s longest-running literacy initiative, takes place from April 29 to May 5. The library is hosting two special events for children in which they will receive a free, brand-new book as part of the celebration activities.

On Wednesday, May 8, from 6-7 p.m., the book “Barnyard Banter” by Denise Fleming will be given away to children ages birth to 2 years old during a special early literacy program. The library will have creation stations that foster a deeper exploration of the book through art exploration, sensory play, dramatic play, matching games and a scavenger hunt.

On Saturday, May 11, from 12:30-2 p.m., the book, “Not a Box” by Antoinette Portis will be given to children ages 3-5 during the Lycoming County Pop-Up Play event at the library. Join us in celebrating the power of imagination and creativity with this year’s title with a special visit from Lycoming County Pop-Up Play, an organization that encourages open-ended, child-directed free play opportunities. This program is best for children ages 2 to 11.

Research shows that babies and young children need books and that reading aloud to young children is not only one of the best activities to stimulate language and cognitive skill but it also builds motivation, curiosity and memory.
The Brown Library supports the PA Forward statewide initiative of basic literacy, which envisions a state with one of the highest literacy rates in the country. It also puts the library as a community center of learning to fuel educational opportunities for residents of all ages.
