Considering a career change? Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) courses are beginning in January, 2020, offered through the Harrisburg Area Community College.

The EMR course is for first responders at the scene of an emergency and includes lessons about the emergency medical system in general, immediate care for life-threatening injuries or illnesses, controlling the scene of an emergency, and preparing for the arrival of an ambulance. Classes will be held at the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, beginning on January 8, 2020. The registration deadline is December 13 or until the class is full. Tuition for this course is $475, and must be paid at the time of registration.

Another EMR course scheduled at the Waterville Fire Department begins January 16. The registration deadline for this course is January 3 or until all seats are filled; tuition cost is the same as the Hughesville class.

The EMT course covers anatomy and physiology, injury and illness assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillation (AED), and other responsibilities of EMTs. Classes will be held at the Loyalsock Fire Company. The EMT course has a tuition price of $825, to be paid at the time of registration. The registration deadline for this course is December 20 or until the class is full, and the course begins on Jan. 7, 2020.
