Williamsport – AIDS Resource and the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Coalition have partnered to host “The Hero Initiative: Harm Reduction Educators Removing Obstacles,” a forum in response to the opioid crisis, Friday, August 23, 2019, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The forum will be held at the Community Theatre League, 3rd Floor CAST Lobby, 100 West 3rd Street in the city.
The free training will help participants understand harm reduction principles as a substance abuse prevention tool and become advocates for policy changes in the state. While the program is free, pre-registration is required by visiting www.williamsporthero.eventbrite.com.
Kirsten Burkhart, Executive Director, AIDS Resource, noted, “we are pleased to partner with the PA Harm Reduction Coalition because they emphasize community-based advocacy as a means to change how our legislators deal with substance abuse and recovery initiatives in our state. The opioid crisis has affected our area and we felt it was important to help our communities be unified in getting their stories heard in Harrisburg.”
Burkhart continued, “we know that non-traditional means for promoting recovery and prevention has worked in other parts of the country and world and it is now time to bring those innovative methods to our state. We want health professionals, social service personnel, and any other people personally affected by opioids to learn how to advocate with policy makers in Harrisburg.”
