Williamsport -- The 41st Williamsport Area CROP Walk has been set for Sunday, October 13, according to organizers Rev. Ken Wagner-Pizza and Rev. Gwen Bernstine. The Williamsport Walk will begin at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Walkers will have the option of walking three, six or nine miles on the River Walk.
The total amount raised by the 2018 CROP Walk was $12,227.41. Of this total, $2,190 was generated by the Hughesville Walk, organized by Beacon United Methodist Church. Among the groups participating in the Williamsport Walk, top fund raisers were St. Luke Lutheran Church and New Covenant United Church of Christ.
The goal for the 2019 Walk will be $15,000. Proceeds will go locally to the New Love Center in Jersey Shore, the Son Light House of Muncy, United Churches' Food Pantry and Sojourner Truth Food Ministries as well as going nationally and internationally to help people who are hungry.
The original purpose of the CROP movement was to give hungry people an opportunity to pick up fruits and vegetables left behind in farmers' fields after the harvest. But for the past 49 years, as Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, groups across the country have held walks to contribute to the effort to combat hunger, and for 40 years the Williamsport community has been one of these groups.
