Williamsport – Another local retailer is set to close its doors. The parent company of Kmart announced Thursday the store at the Loyal Plaza, 1915 E. Third Street, will close in February 2020. A liquidation sale will begin on Dec. 2. The Kmart store in Berwick also will close by February.
Transform Holdco, which has owned the assets of Kmart and Sears since February 2019, said in the press release that they are “pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors.”
As a result, a total of 96 Sears and Kmart stores will close in the United States. Included in the closures are 51 Sears and 45 Kmart stores. Only 182 stores will be left, according to the press release.
Kmart and Sears stores, which are part of Sears Holdings Corporation, have been struggling for several years. The company filed for bankruptcy in October of 2018. Hundreds of Sears stores have been shuttered, including the Lycoming Mall location in January of 2018. Sears locations at the Susquehanna Valley Mall near Selinsgrove and Columbia Colonnade (formerly Columbia Mall) in Bloomsburg also have closed.
In September, the company announced that the Kmart in Towanda was on a list of stores set to close later this year. Kmart store in Shamokin Dam closed in January of 2018.
