George R. Schramm

George R. Schramm, Sr., 88, of Williamsport, passed away on August 15, 2011 at the Gatehouse of Divine Providence Hospital, Williamsport.

Born in Williamsport, on July 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Chester M. and Helen Bussler Schramm. He was married to the former Betty L. Yoder for 50 years until her death in 1994.

George graduated from Williamsport High School in 1941 and briefly worked for his father at C.J. Schramm’s Tailor Shop before becoming employed at AVCO (no Textron Lycoming) as a draftsman. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943, he became an AMM2c and flew with VPB-118 in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to AVCO until he retired in 1984 as Chief Engineer.

He enjoyed working at his cabin, golfing in the summer and Alpine skiing in the winter until he was 82 years old.

Surviving are one brother, Carl F., Williamsport, a daughter Betty Ralston (Mark) of Ocean City, NJ; two sons, George Jr. (Joyce) of Cogan Station and Curtis (Pat) of Wellsboro; two grandsons, Major Andrew Ralston, USMC, Baton Rouge, LA, Ryan Schramm (Anna) of Pembroke, New Hampshire and two granddaughters, Valerie and Melanie Schramm both of Cogan Station.
He was predeceased by a brother, Chester M. Jr., and sisters, Helen L. Reams and Emma J. Smith.

Visitors will be received from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, August 18 at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St. Williamsport. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2 p.m.  with the Rev. Dr. James R. Behrens presiding.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Gatehouse, 1100 Grampian Boulevard, Williamsport, Pa 17701.
