Obit: Esther M. Houseknecht

Esther M. Houseknecht, 92, of Muncy Valley, died Monday, May 15, 2017 at her home.

Born September 29, 1924 in Penn Twp., she was a daughter of the late George H. and Stella V. (Snyder) Kepner. Her husband of 62 years, the late Robert L. Houseknecht, Sr., preceded her in death on June 8, 2005.

Esther was a graduate of Hughesville High School, Class of 1942. She was a member of Franklin Fairview “Stoneheap” Church and was a founding member of the Muncy Valley Fire Company Auxiliary. Esther enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, quilting, bird watching, traveling with her husband, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Leonard and Carolyn Reed. She was a very family oriented person and always cherished every moment she got to spend with her loved ones.

She is survived by five daughters: Regina L. Miller of Eagles Mere, June M. (Duane) Bender of Muncy Valley, Sylvia L. (David) Bressler of Hughesville, Kristin L. (Chris) Downey of Huntersville, and Melinda L. (Brian) McKenna of Lebanon; two sons, Robert L. (Libby) Houseknecht Jr of Montgomery, and David L. (Sue) Houseknecht of Muncy Valley; two brothers, Clyde Kepner of Muncy, and Marlyn Kepner of Hughesville; 26 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn L. Stanton; five brothers, Gerald, Oscar, Ralph, Melvin, and Lewis Kepner; and four sisters, Claire Penta, Thelma Burkhart, Glenna Gardner, and Grace Kepner. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 19 at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville, with Rev. Kathy Burkhart officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, the evening prior, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Franklin Fairview Church, 2192 State Route 42, Unityville, PA 17774 or the Muncy Valley Fire Company, 11997 PA-42, Muncy Valley, PA 17758.
