Message from George Greig Secretary of Agriculture
There's no time like the present to make your voice heard on behalf of PA ag. Ag advocates come in all forms, from the beekeepers and fair volunteers I met in January to the PA Farm Bureau and PennAg Industries Assoc. members who will meet next week. You're never old enough to stop or too young to start spreading the word about farming here in PA. Just ask the 4-Hers I spoke with last week during their State Capital Days, or the FFA members Gov. Corbett and I addressed Tuesday during their State Legislative Leadership Conference. Gov. Corbett encouraged those FFA members to become good citizens. Many of our agriculturalists have grown up in the 4-H and FFA program, learning citizenship along the way. The 4-H motto is, "To Make the Best Better." The FFA creed begins, "I believe in the future of ag." It also mentions, "less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining, in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends on me." The 4-H pledge emphasizes clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service and better living for country and world. Ag is steeped in values that serve our society well. So as we celebrate PA Ag Weeknext week, join me in seeking support to empower producers and agribusinesses and ensure ag remains at the heart of our economy. Whether through your own voice or that of an org that shares your perspective, know whatever step you take will be an important one to keep our industry viable.

Did You Know?
PA farmers know being green isn't just for Muppets and St. Patty's Day celebrations – it's important for sustaining PA ag. By implementing practices with help from the Resource Enhancement and Protection Program, farmers reduced sediment runoff by 877,059 tons in 2010-11. That's enough to cover PA's entire Susquehanna River watershed in three inches of fertile topsoil.
