Drainage onto PennDOT Roadways Prohibited
Montoursville - With the winter season fast approaching, PennDOT would like to remind all property owners that drainage from adjoining properties is not to be directed toward or onto public roadways.
With the recent flooding in the area and the high groundwater table, many home and business owners have relied on sump pumps to keep their basements and businesses dry. The water pumped from or draining from these operations is not permitted to drain onto roadways. All pipes and hoses draining to state roadways should be removed immediately. PennDOT understands the need for property owners to remove water from their buildings, but the drainage should be directed away from the roadways.
PennDOT's primary intent for this reminder is to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Excess water that drains onto the highway can freeze in colder weather, causing unexpected icy spots and potential driving hazards.
