Route 125 Mine Subsidence Fix Completed; Roadway Reopened

October 9, 2011

Montoursville - Remedial work at that mine subsidence along Route 125 south of Shamokin in Northumberland County has just been completed this morning.

The roadway is reopened to traffic. The detour is lifted.

A PennDOT crew used rock to backfill a substantial portion of the void last weekend. After several days of monitoring for any settling, the crew then placed 85 cubic yards of concrete atop the rock. Additional backfill was placed to finish off the project.

The mine void that opened up along Route 125 had an opening at the surface of 20 feet and a depth of at least 200 feet. Route 125 was closed to traffic to ensure the public’s safety until a fix to stabilize the ground there could be implemented.
