The Great Race

I just finished one of the best new picture books to come down the pike in a long time. Kevin O'Malley, author of the Miss Malarkey series, Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share, and Animal Crackers Fly the Coop has come up with his own unique telling of Aesop's The Tortoise and the Hare. The Great Race has puns, word play and charming ink and watercolor pictures tell a lively tale that gently pokes fun at celebrity and celebrity worship.

Nate Tortoise is fed up with hearing about Lever Lapin's great exploits wherever her goes. The final straw is when he is moved from his favorite table at Le Gaganspew to make room for Lapin and his entourage. He challenges the egotistical hare to a race and goes into training. In spite of Lapin's jeers and the crowd's mocking, he plods along and crosses the finish line first! How, you ask? Read The Great Race with your favorite munchkins to find out!
