WINDHAM--Learn how to can or freeze fruits and vegetables at home. Come learn the latest on how to preserve food that is safe and high in quality. Two classes, “Home Canning Basics” and “Good Eating from the Freezer,” will take place on Saturday, July 10 at the Windham Township Community Hall. Cathy Guffey, food safety educator with Penn State Cooperative Extension will teach the classes.

Each class will include discussion of basic principles for preserving safe, high quality food. During the canning class, a video will show how to use the pressure and boiling water canners. For the freezing class a video will show how to blanch and package foods for the freezer. Equipment and supplies will be on display. Many resources will also be available to take home. The recently updated USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning will be available to purchase for $15.

The canning class will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon and the freezing class from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Come to one or both classes. If you plan to stay for both classes, you may want to bring your lunch. Testing of pressure canner dial gauges will be done between 9:30 and 10 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. Dial gauges should be checked yearly for accuracy. It is not necessary to bring the whole canner, just the gauge.

The cost for each class is $5 per adult or $8 per household. Contact the Bradford County Extension Office by July 8 to register. Call the Extension Office at (570) 265-2896 or toll-free at 1-866-796-3954 or email at bradfordext@psu.edu. When registering indicate the class you will attend. Class fees will be collected at the door.
