Interesting Economic Upside to Gas Drilling

Northern Pennsylvania charities – hospitals, libraries and scholarship funds – expect to benefit from the royalties and lease deals linked with landowner coalitions in Wayne and Susquehanna counties.

In coming years, landowners will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in coming years from the Marcellus Shale industry leases. Since 2008, the Community Foundation of Susquehanna and Wayne Counties in Montrose has received $250,000 channeled to endowments, including health care, libraries and scholarships.

According to foundation President Peter Quigg, donors tend to be senior citizens without mortgages. "They are established people who have been here for along time, and they want to pay back," he said.
