Community Awareness Event on Opioid Misuse Set in Lewisburg

LEWISBURG -- DJ Choices, a Susquehanna Valley based newly minted community-benefit organization, is holding a community awareness event on heroin and opioid misuse and how to combat it from 5 to 8 p.m. May 23 at Silver Moon Banquet Hall, 137 Silver Moon Lane. DJ Choices is designed to educate and help prevent the misuse of substances, specifically heroin and prescription pain pills and  seeks community support in stemming the tide of deaths, overdoses and overall prescription pill misuse.  Designed as an in-school education program, DJ Choices uses lights, sound, and an all-out concert type program to support school districts in their quest to prevent drug misuse.  The May 23 event is to bring the community together to raise awareness and also, funds for the growing epidemic and the programming it seeks to provide.

A panel of experts will talk about heroin, opioid misuse and how to combat it as a community. Experts will include: Union County Coroner, District Attorney and Probation officer, and treatment providers. The panel will talk about treatment, deaths, misuse, stigma and resources. Individuals and family members who have suffered the consequences of addiction will also be there to share their stories.

Coroners from Union, Snyder and Northumberland County reported 35  overdose deaths last year, up a staggering 80 percent from the 20 reported in 2015. Of those, it is unknown how many began their journey of addiction                in early adulthood.  We do know however, that the adolescent brain, which continues to develop until age 25, is profoundly susceptible to the influence of drugs and alcohol. Early substance use greatly increases the                               risk of addiction in later life, causing a myriad of other problems, including community-resource drain. DJ Choices aims to partner with local schools and municipalities to bring education and prevention to the forefront.

The event is free and open to the public, no registration required. The Union County Sheriff's Office will be on hand with a prescription drug take-back box to properly dispose of old prescriptions in an environmentally safe manner.
