WILLIAMSPORT -- On May 27 at 7:30 pm, on the stage of the Community Arts Center, the Uptown Music Collective and the Williamsport Civic Chorus will present their first collaboration, Voices Rising. Alongside the heavy vocal sound of the Williamsport Civic Chorus, this concert event will feature Uptown Music Collective students performing “vocal-heavy” rock classics by groups like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more.
The music of the pioneers of rock and modern pop music frequently recorded their music with large vocal ensembles. That tradition has continued to have a place in modern music through our rock history thanks to artists like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Queen, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, U2, Foreigner, and many more. Through this one-night event, the Uptown Music Collective and the Williamsport Civic Choir will pay tribute to this tradition, deliver an intense and exciting concert experience, while also breaking new ground for both organizations.
In the last 17 years, the Uptown Music Collective has grown from what many used to call “the best-kept secret in the Williamsport area,” to one of the area’s most highly respected, non-profit, educational organizations. While the school is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education to students of all ages, it focuses many of its programs on students 10 – 18. The Uptown Music Collective is known for its positive peer group, inspiring teachers, and a diverse multitude of performance opportunities.
“The Music Director of the WCC, Michael Connor,  came to me with the idea of doing a collaborative concert featuring rock songs with big vocal choruses and or massed vocal backing parts,” said Dave Brumbaugh, Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective. “We agreed to join our two groups, assigning my students the role of lead vocalists, and the rocking band parts, and the WCC group providing the vocal heaviness. We’re both excited to see the results.”
For more than seventy years, the talented and dedicated singers of the Williamsport Civic Chorus have gathered together for the common purpose of perpetuating the richness and diversity of choral music for the enjoyment and edification of audiences and singers, alike.  The singers join for many different reasons: to express themselves; to sing with friends, old and new; to improve as vocalists; to add to the cultural vitality of the greater Williamsport area.
“It is such a joy to work with different ensembles to create a collaborative effort, said Michael Connor, Music Director of the Williamsport Civic Chorus. “Working with the Collective and building a performance is very interesting to me.”
Voices Rising will feature Collective students who have been diligently preparing for this event for over two months.  Along with the live music, there will be a professional grade light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also direct the show. There is also a group of younger students, called “Tech Monkeys” who will serve as stage technicians and spotlight operators. The cast for the show will be a mix of seasoned UMC stage veterans and up and coming Collective students.
Media sponsors include Lamar Advertising, NorthCentralPa.com, The Graphic Hive, and all of Backyard Broadcasting. Tickets for the performance are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Community Arts Center Box Office, Alabaster Coffee, K&S Music, the Uptown Music Collective, Robert M Sides, Otto’s Book Store, and through the Williamsport Civic Chorus. Will Call tickets are also available. For more information about the show visit uptownmusic.org or call 570-329-0888.
