Lieutenant Governor Portrait of Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati Unveiled
June 13, 2014
(HARRISBURG) – This week the Lieutenant Governor Portrait of Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati was unveiled at the State Capitol in Harrisburg. Senator Scarnati served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from November 2008 through January 18, 2011.
The portrait of former Lieutenant Governor Joe Scarnati was unveiled at a small ceremony in the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room on Wednesday afternoon. Scarnati was joined by current Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, close friends and family and portrait artist Tom Wise and his family.
Scarnati explained that artist Tom Wise did not accept money for his work on the portrait, but requested instead that donations be made to the Geisinger Health System Foundation, in memory of his late wife Cheryl Wise. A total of $16,000 was donated by sponsors and will be given to the Foundation in Cheryl’s honor.
“I am grateful to artist Tom Wise for the time and energy he spent on this portrait,” Scarnati said. “He is an immensely talented artist and true gentleman who is helping to preserve history, while also working to positively impact the lives of those suffering from cancer.”
In his 13 years as a State Senator, Scarnati has served as a rank and file member of the Senate, as a member of Senate Leadership and currently as Senate President Pro Tempore – a position that he was elected to by the full Senate. In November of 2008, with the passing of Catherine Baker Knoll, Scarnati became Pennsylvania’s 31st Lieutenant Governor. He served the remainder of Lieutenant Governor Knoll’s term, which ended January 18, 2011.
“Serving the Commonwealth as Lieutenant Governor was an honor,” Scarnati stated. “As I look back over my time as Lieutenant Governor I am humbled to have had the opportunity to bring greater fiscal accountability to the office and to help make a difference in the lives of some Pennsylvanians by serving as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons.”
The portrait of Scarnati will hang in the Lieutenant Governor’s Reception Room, along with the portraits of previous Lieutenant Governors of the Commonwealth.
