Sen. Gene Yaw to Hold Annual Student Government Seminar
May 21, 2014
HARRISBURG – On Thursday, May 22nd, state Senator Gene Yaw (R-23) will host his annual Student Government Seminar.
More than 300 participants, including students and advisors representing 17 high schools throughout Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania, will take part in the full day event, to be held at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, 1 College Avenue, Williamsport. The event is the largest Senate organized Student Government Seminar in the state.
“This seminar is a great opportunity for high school students to interact with their local, state and federal officials,” Yaw said. “The seminar allows students to develop legislation, debate important issues with key policymakers, allows them to offer their personal input and vote on “mock” bills in an open session. The intent is for students to obtain a better understanding of the legislative process and develop professional relationships that can open the door for future internships and job opportunities,” Yaw added.
This year, Sen. Yaw will welcome federal officials, state legislators from across Pennsylvania, members of Governor Tom Corbett’s Administration, as well as local community leaders, representatives from the legal, medical, environmental and transportation sectors, lobbyists and the media.
During Thursday’s program, two students will be chosen to receive “Peggy Madigan Memorial Leadership Scholarship.” The scholarships, named in memory of the late wife of former state Senator Roger A. Madigan, are presented to student(s) who attend Yaw’s annual seminar, and who are enrolled at the Pennsylvania College of Technology for the following fall semester. The student(s) must also write a short essay on their community service efforts.
The seminar begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 2:00 PM.
