Scarnati Announces New Veterans Designation on PA Driver’s Licenses

March 4, 2014

Pennsylvania veterans can now apply for a special designation on their driver’s license to honor their service as one of the Commonwealth’s 950,000 military veterans, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-25).

“Pennsylvania veterans have asked for this designation for years, and I am very happy that it is now available as a small way to honor their service and sacrifice for our freedoms,” Scarnati said.

Scarnati explained that the patriotic veterans’ mark of honor on the driver’s licenses will include an American flag graphic with the word “veteran” printed underneath.

“Veterans often ask how they can provide proof of military service without having to carry around their formal discharge papers,” Scarnati stated.  “I am pleased that the designation will offer greater convenience by allowing them to use the licenses when applying for programs, benefits and services.”

Scarnati noted that the veteran’s designation on Pennsylvania Driver’s Licenses is now being implemented as a result of legislation that was unanimously passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor in October of 2012.  Act 176 of 2012 allows for the issuance of a Pennsylvania Driver’s License or Identification Card that clearly indicates that the bearer is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. This is being accomplished by adding a Veterans Designation directly to the bearer’s Driver’s License or Identification Card.

Veterans holding a non-commercial driver’s license or identification card can immediately apply for the designation by visiting and clicking on the American Flag/Veterans Designation icon.

The licenses will not carry any additional costs other than the existing replacement price charged by PennDOT.   A veteran can elect to replace his or her current license or wait until that license is due to be replaced.

To renew a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and add the Veterans Designation, applicants must complete and mail in a DL-143CD form and applicable fees. To obtain a duplicate CDL with the Veterans Designation, applicants must complete and mail in a DL-80CD form and applicable fees.
