Yaw, White Take Aim at Federal Biggert-Waters Act
January 24, 2014
HARRISBURG – Recognizing the significant rise in federal flood insurance premiums as a direct result of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, state senators Gene Yaw (R-23) and Don White (R-41) will hold a joint public hearing to assess state and local impacts across the Commonwealth.
Yaw, who chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, and White, who chairs the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, will combine their resources to focus on testimony that will take aim at the federally approved legislation.
The hearing, scheduled for Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 at 9:30AM in Hearing Room 1 of the North Office Building, will include testimony from several sectors of government, as well as the public.
Those testifying include: Dr. Vince Matteo, President and CEO of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce; Jeff Wheeland, Chairman, Lycoming County Commissioners; Fran McJunkin, Lycoming County Planning Commission; Lisa Schaefer, Director of Government Relations for the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania (CCAP); Barry Denk, Executive Director of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania; Donald Griffin, Vice President, Personal Lines, Property Casualty Insurers Association of America; Dan Berninger, President and CEO of the Muncy Bank and Trust Company; Kim Skumanick, President, Pennsylvania Association of Realtors (PAR); and community residents.
“Homeowners throughout my Senate District have or will soon see their flood insurance bills skyrocket to unprecedented levels,” Yaw said. “My constituents deserve an alternative to these drastic rate increases and should not be forced from their homes because they cannot afford to pay these new mandatory rates.”
“This is a very important issue that affects many Pennsylvanians,” White added. “I am eager to hear from the interested parties and work toward a solution.”
The joint committee hearing will be broadcast LIVE on www.pasenategop.com.
