Singers Invited to Join Festival Chorus
January 14, 2013
MANSFIELD, PA— Area singers are invited to join the Mansfield University Festival Chorus for the spring semester. The Chorus, directed by Peggy Dettwiler, will meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in Steadman Theatre beginning Tuesday, January 29.
The Festival Chorus will perform Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace on April 13-14.
The mass, commissioned in England for the new millennium, powerfully portrays the horrors of war through the use of graphic text and full orchestra with dynamic brass and percussion effects. The words are taken from the Psalms, Revelations, Kipling, Dryden, Tennyson, and the Mass Ordinary.
Jenkins also includes a Moslem Call to Prayer and a poem by a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to reflect the multi-cultural plea for peace by all humankind. This mass has been performed throughout the world to critical acclaim.
Participation in the rehearsals and performances is open to all persons on the university campus, high school students, and community singers. Singers only need to vocalize for placement in the soprano, alto, tenor or bass sections.
Sectional rehearsals will take place on Thursdays from 5 to 5:50 p.m. Volunteer members are encouraged, but not required, to participate in sectional rehearsals.
Participants should purchase their music at the MU Campus Bookstore before the first rehearsal.
