Cutters lose 3-2 in heartbreaker
GAME HIGHLIGHTS: July 16, 2012 – Roman Quinn was at third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Chris Serritella grounded out to short in a 3-2 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters Monday ninth.
Williamsport had allowed the go-ahead run to score in the top of the inning on a pair of Cutter defensive miscues. A Mitch Walding error allowed Austin Booker to reach. Later, Quinn and Walding miscommunicated on an infield pop-up that kept it at one out. On the ensuing at-bat, Jacob Tanis was able to drive a sac fly to center for the eventual game-winning run.
The miscue spoiled an excellent day for Quinn, who went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
It also gave Andre Kinder his first loss, even though he went three innings and the run was unearned.
Jordan Guth got the start for the Cutters and allowed just two runs in five innings of work.
Williamsport scored first in the third inning. Quinn led off on a triple to right field. Two batters later, Larry Greene chopped a ball to first baseman Miguel Marte. He tried to gun down Quinn at the plate, but the throw was late.
After Vermont took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, Quinn provided more spark. He singled to lead off, then stole second. A Cameron Perkins single to right later, the game was tied at two.
The Crosscutters tried to mount a rally in the ninth. Quinn again led off with a single, and reached second on a balk. He then reached third on a Greene groundout, but was stranded by Serritella.
The loss drops Williamsport to 10-18. They hit the road to Auburn Tuesday with the first pitch against the Doubledays scheduled for 7:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com. WP- Austin House (1-0, 1.54)
