Choral Collage to Feature Works of Gwyneth Walker
MANSFIELD, PA—The Mansfield University Music Department will present the annual Fall Choral Collage, the first choral concert of the season, on Sunday, October 30, at 3 p.m. in Steadman Theatre.
The concert is free and open to the public. Due to the popularity of this event, audience members are urged to arrive early.
The Women's Choir, Men's Choir, Concert Choir and Festival Chorus, all under the direction of Peggy Dettwiler, will perform. In all, more than 165 singers will participate in the concert.
Each group will perform at least one selection by composer Gwyneth Walker, who will be present for rehearsals and the concert.
Walker is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. Degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. She now lives on a dairy farm in Braintree, VT.
Walker's catalog includes over 200 commissioned works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, and solo voice. Her music has been a favorite of the MU choral ensembles as several of the past holiday concerts have closed with a finale composed by Walker.

The program will also feature Finlandia by Sibelius, Ehre sei Gott by Mendelssohn, and Kyrie by Glenn McClure, featuring MU Professor Adam Brennan as soloist on the steel drums.
The audience will also be treated to some humor, with the Men's Chorus rendition of Johnny Schmoker and the Concert Choir's performance of Pal-So-Seong, a Korean laughing song.
The Festival Chorus will inaugurate the spring major choral work Mozart's Requeim with a performance of the Lacrymosa from this dramatic mass.
Brass, flute, piano, and percussion accompaniment will add color and flair to the afternoon concert.
The Choral Collage is sponsored in part by Student Activity Fees.
