Neil Young once said, "It's better to burn out, than to fade away," a sentence that would later be echoed in the suicide note of Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain. In 1994 Cobain became a member of the "27 Club," a group of musicians who all died tragically at the young age of 27. Other well known members of this exclusive club include; Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and most recently, Amy Winehouse. On October 28th and 29th 2011 at 7:30pm on the stage of the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, over forty Uptown Music Collective students will pay tribute to these legendary musicians with their presentation of Night with the Living Dead: The 27 Club.

The Halloween performance, a sequel to the groundbreaking Uptown Music Collective performance Night With the Living Dead (2008), will celebrate the music of these artists, who in spite of their lives being cut short, left the world an amazing musical legacy. In what has become a trademark of Uptown Music Collective major performances, students will perform highly polished, note for note renditions of select master works from each artist, infusing each with their own artistry while delivering an exciting, high energy performance.

Established in April of 2000, the Uptown Music Collective (a 501c 3 non profit school of music) has developed a reputation as the premier source of music education in the area, with an enrollment of over 120 students. Offering private lessons at all levels on guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, as well as classes and workshops in music theory, song writing, and styles such as the Blues, Jazz, Classical and Rock. The primary age range of the Collective is 10 - 18 yrs. old, but is open to all ages and levels. Along with private lessons, the UMC offers a myriad of programs including its flagship Performance Program. This program educates students about the ins and outs of major and minor performances, including direction, production, preparation and technical aspects of the performances. The program brings outstanding student run performances to the area, including most recently Rhythm Nation, a collaboration between the Collective and the Milissa Augustine Dance Academy. Night with the Living Dead: The 27 Club, will feature performers between 9 and 18 years of age who have been preparing for this performance for well over two months. Along with the live music, there will be accompanying video presentations as well as a powerful light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers, but also direct the show. There is also a group of younger students, called "Tech Monkeys" who will serve as stage technicians, spot light operators and video operators. The student leadership committee for this show includes: Directors Nuria Hunter,17, Williamsport Area High School; and Brandon Route, 17, Williamsport Area High School; along with Tess Clutter,15,Williamsport Area High School; Katie Kahn, 16, Williamsport Area High School; Garrett Gaetano,17,Loyalsock Township High School; AJ Robbins, 13, Loyalsock Township Middle School; Shawn Chism,15,Cyber School; Gabe Stillman,16,Williamsport Area High School; Dylan Rockoff, 17, Loyalsock Township High School; Jasmine Harlan,16, Cyber School; Ronnie Reynolds,16, Loyalsock Township High School. The leadership committee is under the supervision of Uptown Music Collective Executive Director, Dave Brumbaugh. "The musical legacy left for future generations by the founding members of the 27 Club, Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison, still resonates with our youth today," said Dave Brumbaugh. "The biggest tragedy, beyond the obvious loss of their presence, is the loss of the amazing music these creative artists and the newer members of this dubious club would be producing today if their lives had not been cut so tragically short. While their problems in life and the ways in which they handled them may not set the best example for our young people, the importance of their music and what they accomplished in their short careers cannot be ignored. Teaching this music over the last few weeks has put me back in touch with my musical roots and also built within me a new appreciation for both Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. This show is going to be something quite special and anyone who loves rock music owes it to themselves not to miss it." Night with the Living Dead: The 27 Club is sponsored by Superior Plus Energy Services, The Rockoff Family, Turn Key Construction, and Woodlands Bank. Media sponsor for this event is Backyard Broadcasting .Tickets for the performance are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door with the proceeds benefiting the Uptown Music Collective (a 501 c3 Non-Profit School of Music). Tickets are available at The Uptown Music Collective (848 West Fourth St., Williamsport) and The Community Arts Center Box Office (220 West Fourth St., Williamsport) as well as Alabaster Coffee (410 Pine Street, Williamsport) and K & S Music (1116 West Southern Ave, South Williamsport). For more information about, Night with the Living Dead: The 27 Club, or the Uptown Music Collective, check out or call 570-329-0888.

SUN Area Technical Institute - What's New?

The SUN Area Technical Institute is excited about the many projects taking place to improve our school this summer. Once again SUN Tech's halls are busy with improvements.

Let's talk about our new Veterans approved adult daytime program for veterans and their families. The following nine programs are currently approved by the Veterans Administration: Advanced Precision Machining, Advanced Wood Products, Automotive Technology, Diesel & Truck Technology, Drafting CAD Technology, Electronics Technology, HVAC & Plumbing Technology, Computer & Networking Technology, and Welding. If you are a veteran or a dependent of a veteran we will work with you to enroll you in one of our nine approved daytime programs. Additional programs are slated for approval this year.

If you are interested in attending SUN Tech full-time, we have a limited number of seats available in the following programs: Electrical Systems Technology, Advanced Wood Products, Drafting CAD Technology, and Electronics Technology. Call SUN Tech today for additional information.

Do you need to update or learn new skills for employment opportunities or are you interested in taking personal enrichment classes? The Fall 2011 Adult Technical Courses schedule is out! You should check your mail for a brochure, listen for ads on the radio, check in the newspaper, or check out our website at for information, dates, times and locations for over 50 courses available through SUN Tech's adult education program. Evening registration will take place here at the school on September 7, 2011 from 3 PM until 8 PM, mail-in a registration form from the brochure, or register on-line with pay-pal.

SUN Tech now has a foundation. The mission of the SUN Area Career & Technology Education Foundation is to assist current SUN Tech students and faculty by enhancing educational facilities, opportunities, and by increasing student achievement and success.

The foundation is recognized by the I.R.S. as a 501 (C) (3) organization approved to receive charitable contributions. Donations of equipment, materials, or cash are greatly appreciated. Gifts in honor or in memory of friends or family can also be recognized. If you would like to make a donation you can go on SUN-Tech's website for additional information.

Last year our cafeteria installed a new point-of-sale system. Each student keys in a number when they check out of the cafeteria line. This system saves time and eliminates cash transactions at the registers. New this year parents will be able to use a credit card or bank transfer to make payment to their child's account.

If you drive around the back of our building you will see a new dust collection system for our Advanced Wood Products and Carpentry programs. We also have Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) updates taking place throughout the building and our cafeteria received new walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration units. Other changes you will notice when you enter our school is a fresh coat of paint that brightens our hallways.

SUN Tech's information technology department has been busy installing new networking cable throughout the building to improve speed and reliability for our students, faculty, and staff. We pride ourselves on keeping current using the latest technology available. This gives our students the computer skills and knowledge required for a competitive job market and/or post-secondary training upon graduation.

We have also updated the program brochures for our 19 different trade and technical programs offered at SUN Tech. If you are looking for an opportunity to excel as a senior and learn skills to last your lifetime, step into your future at SUN Tech. Students interested in more information should contact their guidance counselor, check out the video on our website at, or call 966-1031 and ask to talk to one of our staff.

We are looking forward to a great school year at the SUN Area Technical Institute!

Visitors Bureau Releases New Native American History Brochure

Partnership with Bucknell University and Northumberland County Historical Society

The Susquehanna River Valley Visitors Bureau (SRVVB), which is the Tourism Promotion Agency for Snyder, Northumberland, and Union Counties, has partnered with Katherine Faull, Professor of German and Humanities at Bucknell University and Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society, to produce a driving tour brochure that highlights the rich Native American and Moravian history in the Susquehanna River Valley.

The "Native Paths" brochure is the first of its kind in Central PA and was a truly collaborative project between the Visitors Bureau, Bucknell University, and the Northumberland County Historical Society. The brochure takes the reader back to the colonial period, some 270 years ago, when Native Americans, colonists and Europeans came together to trade, negotiate, and live. The brochure follows common paths used for exchange, communication, hunting, and war for Native peoples for centuries before the arrival of the European settlers.

The "Native Paths" brochure can be requested for free at or by calling 1-800-525-7320 or 570-524-7234.

The brochure is broken up into eight stops, beginning at the Shikellamy Overlook, moving to Sunbury and the Shikellamy State Park Marina, up the Warrior Path to Montoursville, and then circles back through Central Oak Heights in West Milton, to Blue Hill at the confluence, and finally to Selinsgrove's Isle of Que. The brochure was designed by MoJo Active, located in Watsontown. The Moravian Archives in both Bethlehem, PA and Hernnhut, Germany participated in the project by allowing a manuscript map by Joseph Shippen and a stylized image of Chief Shikellamy to be used in the brochure. Katherine Faull, a local expert on Moravian and Native American cultures, is currently translating various Moravian Missionary diaries from the Colonial Period. She says of the project, "Working with archival materials opened up a new way of looking at the Susquehanna River Valley for me. This tour is my way of sharing those perspectives with both residents and visitors alike." Cindy Inkrote, Director of the Northumberland County Historical Society says of the initiative, "The Native Paths driving tour offers a wonderful opportunity to follow the pathways of the Susquehanna River Valley's early inhabitants and to become more aware of the interaction of those cultures. Dr. Faull's translation of the Moravian diaries brings a new level of understanding to what took place during the 18th century at the Susquehanna's confluence."
