Newberry


The Newberry section of Williamsport is on the western side of Lycoming Creek. Once known as "Jaysburg," it was named for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Jay and the leaders of that community believed the new county seat should be there because it was the closest thing to a village west of Muncy. This was not to be. The county seat was awarded to a new community across the creek and Jaysburg soon disappeared from the map and its land was absorbed by the new city of Williamsport.
