The Mighty Susquehanna

11 weeks 3 days ago

The Susquehanna River is a shallow river that flows about 440 miles, from Cooperstown to the Chesapeake Bay. Nearly 200 years ago, canals were used to transport goods and people instead of the river. Canal boats would use the river where it was deeper, or where dams had raised the water level. more»

Living with Pennsylvania Black Bears

19 weeks 4 hours ago

BLACK BEARS have been roaming our forests, wallowing in our bogs and swamps, and living around our farms since the days before the earliest human settlements. Images of Nature: Wood Frog

20 weeks 3 days ago

Although primarily diurnal (most active during the day), the wood frog -- with its camouflage and secretive, solitary nature -- seldom is seen by woodland walkers. More terrestrial than most frogs, the wood frog ventures far from water and favors shady, damp haunts. Here, it blends with dead-leaf litter on the forest floor. Capable of long-distance jumps, it also can turn itself around when it hits the ground to face the pursuing (and probably startled) enemy. This very adaptable animal is found as far north as the Arctic Circle.

While bobcats sometimes venture out in the daytime, they are primarily nocturnal animals. They have large eyes, which are well-adapted to see in the dark. Eagles, Herons Call Susquehanna's West Branch Home

23 weeks 4 days ago

The river has hosted several special visitors this summer.

A bald eagle family, a male and a female and their two eaglets, have been unusually active on the West Branch of the Susquehanna this past week. The female has brought her juveniles to the mouth of the Loyalsock Creek to fly and to hunt at dawn, and she returns later in the day to pirouette in the sky with her mate.

And, with the river low this time of the year, many islets have emerged, creating temporary wildlife habitats where a pair of Great Blue Herons have prowled for fish. more»
