Wmspt Bureau of Police offers Citizens Police Academy classes

Have you ever wondered why policeman never smile?  Mainstream media would leave the public to believe that it is because policeman are a bunch of overpaid Neanderthals who do nothing but complain that they are not paid enough for the thrilling work that they do.

In reality it is because the battle against crime is not won in the courtroom- it is won in the court of public opinion.  The public has been being misled about law enforcement at both the national and local level.  It is hard to smile when the media portrays us a being a bunch of Neanderthals always trying to stick it to the public.

Tot the citizen it may frequently appear that the police are not doing their job or are exceeding their boundaries.  By allowing citizens and uncensored look at what rules, regulations, and policies the police must follow, some of these misunderstandings can be alleviated.

The objective of the Williamsport Bureau of Police Citizens Police Academy is to produce informed citizens not to train individuals to become citizen police officers.   In the past, citizens have simply seen a uniform, now they can have an understanding about the persons behind the badge and see for themselves that we are just like them.

The citizens Police Academy is an 8 week program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Williamsport Police department.  It consists of a series of classes and discussions that will be held once a week, on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 Pm until 8:30Pm.

The classes will provide an in-depth view into various areas of law enforcement.  It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in the city of Williamsport, and how to develop an effective partnership with the police department.

Our goal is to create better understanding, communication, and partnership between our citizens and the Williamsport Police through education, in order to establish a safer community.

When residents take a more personal interest in their city and the protection of their community and neighborhoods, they enjoy a safer and closer relationship with those who make up their community.

An effective partnership between the community and the Police plays a vital and important role in reducing crime in any community.  Therefore, the Williamsport Police Department has instituted a Citizens Police Academy, to improve communication and obtain input and support throughout the city.  It is our hope that the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues that are affecting our community.  Our hope is that our graduates will take their newly gained knowledge back to their neighborhoods where they can use it to help enhance the quality of neighborhood life.
