Projects Sought for Transportation Alternatives Program

Over a million dollars is available for alternative transportation projects in eight Central Pennsylvania counties ─ Clinton, Columbia, Juniata, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union. The eight are members of the SEDA-COG Rural Planning Organization (RPO).
Through the new federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), $1,031,608 is available locally for projects such as trails, sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, overlooks, lighting, and rehabilitating historic transportation facilities. Jim Saylor, Director, SEDA-COG Transportation Planning program, said, “TAP is for community-based projects that expand travel choices and enhance the transportation experience by improving the cultural, historic, and environmental aspects of our transportation infrastructure.”
Funds may not be used for routine maintenance. Project applications must be submitted by Friday, April 12.
Staff of the SEDA-COG RPO is available to assist project applicants, which can include local governments, schools, and transportation-related authorities and agencies. Non-profit organizations are not eligible as direct recipients, but they may partner with any eligible entity on TAP projects.
SEDA-COG has planned an informational workshop at its office from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 12. Interested individuals representing government agencies, municipalities, transportation authorities, school districts, or other local government entities are urged to attend. The office is located at 201 Furnace Road, off of Route 15, south of Lewisburg.
