PPL Susquehanna to Test Warning Sirens Aug. 14

PPL will conduct the annual test of all the sirens in its Susquehanna nuclear plant emergency notification system Thursday (8/14).

“Testing the sirens helps us ensure the emergency warning system is working properly,” said Joe Scopelliti, PPL Susquehanna’s community relations manager. “The sirens are an important part of our emergency communications system to ask the public to tune into local news stations for information.”

In Thursday’s test, the sirens will sound once for three minutes with a steady tone starting at 11 a.m. The public does not need to respond to this test. After the sirens sound, local Emergency Alert System radio and television stations will carry a message about the test.

“The sirens can be used to notify the community of emergencies, not only at the plant, but for any purpose,” Scopelliti said. “Some of the sirens are shared with local fire companies, which use them for fire calls.”

PPL Susquehanna LLC is one of PPL Corporation's generating affiliates. PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), with 2013 revenues of $12 billion, is one of the largest companies in the U.S. utility sector. The PPL family of companies delivers electricity and natural gas to about 10 million customers in the United States and the United Kingdom. PPL recently announced an agreement to combine its competitive market generating company with the competitive generation business of Riverstone Holdings LLC to form Talen Energy Corporation, the third-largest independent power producer in the country.
