Nice Weather Entices River Walkers
The Susquehanna River Walk opens in April, yet sunny weather enticed dozens of people to hike the new path on Saturday and Sunday. Couples strolled hand-in-hand, families walked dogs, and individuals ambled the 4-mile paved path that serves as a bikeway/walkway March 6-7.
The walk loops along the levee system in the City of Williamsport, Borough of South Williamsport and Loyalsock Township with river crossings along the new Market Street Bridge and Maynard Street Bridge. The project also installed benches and garbage receptacles along the River Walk to make it an inviting recreation destination.
The $ 2.3 million project was funded by a combination of federal and state grants administered by PennDOT and state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Timber Trail, funded primarily by the Lumber Heritage Region, highlights the area’s rich lumber heritage through a series of interpretative panels and public art. Muncy artist Pam Madai Barner sculpted a bronze “Woodhick,” that complements the panels. A woodhick is a nickname for a lumberjack.
