The Governors’ Pub
BELLEFONTE -- Welcome to one of Bellefonte’s newer secrets. The Governors’ Pub at 211 W. High opened in November of last year.
It is an up-scale restaurant with middle class prices. It is aptly named for the seven governors who once lived in Bellefonte. When you walk into the warm and friendly atmosphere, one of the first things you might notice is the governors’ collage, outlining a brief history of the seven governors.
This collage was researched and put together by one of the owner’s daughters, Jennifer Brockway, and is a detailed history of William Bigler, John Bigler, Robert Walker, William Packer, Andrew Gregg Curtin, James Beaver, and Daniel Hastings. As you walk further into the restaurant, you might also notice other collages of Bellefonte history including collages of some of the older buildings in Bellefonte.
The Governors’ Pub offers a wide variety of wine, martinis, and specialty drinks. They sell red and white wine, as well as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Red and White Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are also updating their wine list to bring more wine for you wine connoisseurs. Some of the most popular martinis include Chocolate Martinis, and Bad Girl. Some of the more popular specialty drinks include Absolute Castaway and Sweet Allure.
They also have a wide variety of delicious food. For an appetizer, you might want to try steeped mussels. You may also want to try The Governors’ Sausage Stuffed Mushroom or Bangers in a Blanket. Bangers in a Blanket is kielbasa, which is straight from a Polish market in New York. They are in a puffy pastry served with dipping sauce. You might also want to try a John or William Bigler quesadilla.
They also have great soup including Swabian Onion. They also serve up a mean specialty sandwich and salad as well. Some of these sandwiches have the names of governors, which I find absolutely fascinating and fun.
Now to the main menu: They have steak in many forms, and also comfort food such as chicken pot pie and Yank’s Shepherd’s Pie. For lunch they have Bangers and Smash, an English dish. This is grilled kielbasa and sauerkraut with smashed potatoes. For lunch or dinner, a good thing to try is Governors’ Fish and Chips, which is beer battered haddock served with house fries. Enjoy the sandwich version of this dish for lunch.
Soon, in the beginning of March, they will also serve up some live entertainment every Tuesday evening. The band will have something for everyone’s taste.
There is also exciting news. In the side wing of the restaurant, they will be opening the Governors’ Burgers and Brews. Here, you will enjoy the tastes of burgers, beer, homemade fries, and of course, dessert. This will be takeout only.
The Governors’ Pub hours are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.. On Fridays and Saturdays, they are open from 11 a.m. through 10 p.m. Feel free to call them at 814-353-1008 to make reservations. You certainly don’t want to miss out on the wonderful meal that will be served to you here, or the unique drinks.
