Goth Reviews: Michael Miller

Spike: In the mid-80s, a wonderful pack of players from Sacramento (California) emerged from a studio scene, centering around a legendary label called Exit Records. That locus gave us artists like Bourgeoise Tagg and The 77s. Mike was part of that scene. He was Charlie Peacock’s rhythm guitarist before moving to Los Angeles, moonlighting as a “record store rat” and goofy greetings card artist. Then Mike found a sound, working with members of The 77s, The Wallflowers, and Beck’s band.
Goth Woman: Mike has gigged in Williamsport twice. He’s had an odd career path, touring with actress-musician Minnie Driver and doing cameos as “the street musician” on the GILMORE GIRLS TV show. I’ve been a fan of Mike’s since his first real solo album, LIFEBOAT INTO MIGHTY (1998). He’s extremely melodic and economical, but his production and ideas are dense and atmospheric. I used to think he languished too much, that he needed to rock out more, but now I’m glad he trips along at his own speed.
Spike: I MADE YOU UP is his crowning achievement. It’s captivating and brilliant from beginning to end. He cites The Beatles and Todd Rundgren as influences, but Mike has his own ambience. If I may name check, I’d describe this as a happy-fied Portishead filtering “the White Album” through Americana. On that last point, there is some gorgeous pedal steel mixed with shimmering guitars, keyboards, and sitars. The production is layered with sonic sweetening.
Goth Woman: “Carolina Skyline” is absolutely beautiful, taking me into a soundscape with Van Gogh fields and Maxfield Parrish skies.
Spike: Indisputably stunning music, and the guy sings like a bird.
