Goth Reviews: Beyondo

Beyondo a.k.a. Eric Biondo THE MOVE (self-released) http://www.ericbiondo.com.

Goth Woman: I’ve been a big fan of Beyondo since his EMOTIONAL COMPASS album (2005). THE MOVE is an electronic-funk-jazz departure from his usual brainy, witty, sweet, and literate pop music (kept up on his excellent 2008 album DEEPER CONNECTION). I’m not sure if THE MOVE is him blowing off steam or going for audience expansion, but it works. It’s all instrumental, showcasing his ability as a trumpeter and producer.

Spike: The trumpet has served Eric well. He’s gigged with Massive Attack, Sinead O’Connor, TV On the Radio, and he’s always working with ex-Monkee Davy Jones…

Goth Woman: I adore Eric’s horn, but I miss his lovely tenor singing. His song craft is sophisticated, like Todd Rundgren and a bit like Steely Dan (Eric also works with members of Steely Dan’s road band).

Spike: …but song craft is alive and well on THE MOVE. Parts ramble in upbeat trains of thought and end there, but the closing track, “Life,” could be a hit movie theme. THE MOVE is not Eric’s definitive work, but it’s very worthwhile.

Goth Woman: I love “Life.” The melody paves itself in your neurons. It has an ambient, out-of-tune Brian Wilson piano, a Miles Davis mute-whistle effect on the trumpet, and a hot melodica that made me feel a bittersweet nostalgia for “The Sesame Street Theme.” THE MOVE is worth it for this one cut.
